Riding open ocean swells was not just a religious function but an expression of the interconnectedness Hawaiians have with nature and at its simplest level the pure joy of wave-riding.

Yes, today as it was centuries ago, surfing remains a very pure thrill; the aesthetic quality of communion with an environment that is truly removed from our earthly endeavors creates a lasting impression on both kama'aina (resident/native) and malahini (newcomer).
